This morning my youngest daughter and her friend played a game where they had to give each other clues and guess which animals the other one was thinking about.
"If you don't know, don't guess, just say you don't know," my daughter said to her friend.
The answer was squirrel, and to be quite honest the clues were not all that obvious. But still, I gleaned some wisdom from my five-year-old's simple statement.
I love hearing their conversations as they learn to navigate the complicated world around them. Somehow they are able to cut through all of the crap we wade through on a daily basis and come to their own conclusions about what works and what doesn't work.
""Leprechauns are real," my daughter announced last week on St. Patrick's day to her friend in the backseat. "They are very small and very fast."
She made a gesture with her two hands showing a space about four inches high.
"They don't live in North Carolina, just Irishland," she said proudly.
Her nine-year-old sister was only too happy to dispel this notion, along with the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus. She challenged her little sister's explanation.
"But then how do you explain rainbows?" my little one replied, her hands on her hips.
Touche...I could use a little kindergarten wisdom. Maybe if I keep listening it will sink in.
